Hammer Blow for Liverpool: Ekitike in Major Doubt vs Title Rivals Arsenal
Liverpool have been handed a potential injury headache ahead of Thursday's top-of-the-table Premier League clash at Arsenal, with in-form striker Hugo Ekitike a major doubt due to a minor hamstring issue.
The 23-year-old Frenchman missed Sunday's 2-2 draw at Fulham entirely after feeling discomfort in training, forcing Arne Slot to shift Cody Gakpo into a central role. Ekitike has been sensational this season, bagging 11 goals and shining in the absence of long-term absentee Alexander Isak (broken leg).
Slot provided an update post-match:
"He will be out for today and hopefully be back for the Arsenal game, but that’s definitely not sure yet. For a player his age not used to the Premier League intensity, it's been a bit too much."
With Mohamed Salah also away on AFCON duty, Ekitike's potential absence could be a massive blow for the reigning champions as they chase leaders Arsenal at the Emirates (kick-off 8:00 PM UK time).
A scan confirmed it's not serious, but Slot will give a final verdict in Wednesday's press conference. If Ekitike sits out, expect Gakpo or young Florian Wirtz to lead the line again.
Arsenal, fresh from closing the gap, will fancy their chances if Liverpool's attack is blunted – but can the Gunners capitalise?
