Rosenior Lands Chelsea Job Until 2032 – The Longest Contract Gamble Yet?
In a move that underscores the unique dynamics of BlueCo's multi-club model, Chelsea have appointed Liam Rosenior as their new head coach on a staggering contract running until 2032.
The 41-year-old Englishman replaces Enzo Maresca, who departed on January 1 after just 19 months in charge. Maresca's exit came amid a poor run of one win in seven Premier League games and hints of behind-the-scenes issues, despite overseeing a 1-1 draw against Manchester City – rescued by Enzo Fernández's stoppage-time equalizer.
Rosenior arrives from fellow BlueCo-owned club Racing Strasbourg, where he had been head coach since July 2024. In his 18 months in France, he guided the team to a impressive seventh-place finish in Ligue 1 last season and currently has them sitting seventh in the table, unbeaten atop their UEFA Conference League group. His departure follows a 1-1 draw at Nice – Strasbourg's fifth league game without a win.
Speaking at a farewell press conference in France just hours before the announcement, Rosenior confirmed the move:
*"It looks like I'm going to be the next manager of Chelsea. I haven't signed yet, I have agreed verbally with Chelsea... Everything is agreed and it will probably go through in the next few hours."*
He admitted interest from other Champions League clubs but insisted he couldn't turn down the Blues:
*"I will love this club [Strasbourg] for the rest of my life but I cannot turn down Chelsea."*
In his official statement as Chelsea head coach, Rosenior said:
*"I am extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed Head Coach of Chelsea Football Club. This is a club with a unique spirit and a proud history of winning trophies. My job is to protect that identity and create a team that reflects these values in every game we play as we continue winning trophies... I believe deeply in teamwork, unity, togetherness and working for one another, and those values will be at the heart of everything we do."*
Rosenior's journey to Stamford Bridge is remarkable – less than two years after being sacked by Hull City, he's now at one of the Premier League's biggest clubs. Prior roles include head coach stints at Hull and Derby County.
Chelsea, currently fifth in the Premier League, face west London rivals Fulham next – with academy coach Calum McFarlane in temporary charge before Rosenior takes over.
