The Fletcher Factor: Could Fletcher be United's hero
It does not surprise me that Darren Fletcher has been handed the reins at Manchester United as interim manager. An outstanding person, he would also be the perfect choice for the role on a longer-term basis.
"Fletch," as he’s known throughout football, is someone I know intimately. He has been at United since he was a boy, learning under Sir Alex Ferguson and playing alongside club legends. But that history alone isn’t why I believe he’s a top coach in the making. My conviction comes from working directly with him.
When I signed him for West Brom in 2015, I did so on the strength of an unbelievable reference from Sir Alex—one so glowing it was almost frightening. Sir Alex told me that for United’s biggest Champions League away games, he always picked Darren. Why? Because he was an out-and-out winner, relentless, and someone you could absolutely depend on, both on the pitch and off it.
As a fellow Scot, I expected praise, but I soon discovered every word was true. In my 30-year managerial career, with hundreds of signings, I can honestly say I never signed a better player or person.
His contribution at West Brom was incredible. He was a leader from day one, setting standards in training, organising players, and embodying a winning mentality. He played through pain, demanded excellence, and was the ultimate professional. These aren’t just player attributes—they are the foundations of great management.
That’s why his interim appointment makes perfect sense. The modern game often overlooks core values: character, resilience, and an understanding of the club’s soul. Fletcher carries United’s DNA. He knows what it means to wear the badge, to fight for it, and to win for it.
While experienced managers from outside can bring new ideas, they often lack that ingrained connection. Fletcher doesn’t need a manual on United’s expectations—he’s lived them. In a season crying out for identity and fight, who better to instill it than a born leader who has already earned the respect of the dressing room?
Wednesday’s game at Burnley is just the start. For United fans waiting for someone to truly reconnect the team with its heritage and hunger, Darren Fletcher might just be what they’ve been waiting for.
